What is FSH Muscular Dystrophy and why are we trying to find a cure? Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is a genetic muscle disorder characterized by progressive muscle weakness that first and most seriously affects facial, shoulder and upper arm muscles. FSHD is the third most common type of muscular dystrophy. The incidence is estimated to be approximately 1 in 7,500 births. Around 800,000 people worldwide have FSHD, with about 50,000 here in the U.S., making FSHD an “orphan” disease that faces an uphill battle to attract research funding and drug company investment. There is currently no cure and there are no treatments for FSHD. There are currently no clinical trials for promising treatments. We want to change that as fast as possible.
