The app was created by Tom, Jay, Ben, and Archie in their Apps for Good course at Budehaven Community School in Cornwall. The team are all surfers and struggled to find clear data on the best surf spots in their area. They wanted to design an app with easy-to-read surf forecasts for UK beaches to help beginners and pros choose the best place to take their board.

ShoreCast won the My Planet category sponsored by Thomson Reuters at the Apps for Good Awards 2014, the national app competition for Apps for Good students. As an Apps for Good Awards winner, the team worked with development agency Fuerte International to have their app built professionally and launched on to the market, with the support of Apps for Good and Thomson Reuters.
